Celebrating World Autism Day: A Recap of Our Successful Event

On April 2, 2023, STEJONS Organisation proudly celebrated World Autism Day with an event that brought together families, supporters, and community members from all over Kenya. This day was not only a celebration of the incredible individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) but also a testament to the strength and unity of our community.

Event Highlights

Awareness March: We kicked off the day with a vibrant awareness march through the streets of Nairobi. Participants wore blue, the official color of autism awareness, and carried banners and signs with messages promoting understanding and acceptance of ASD. The march was a powerful visual statement, drawing attention and support from passersby and local media.

Resource Fair: The resource fair was a hub of information and support. Families had the opportunity to connect with experts, educators, and service providers. Booths offered resources on early diagnosis, intervention strategies, educational tools, and more. Our team distributed informational pamphlets and booklets to over 500 attendees, ensuring they left with valuable knowledge and contacts.

Workshops and Seminars: We hosted a series of workshops and seminars led by professionals in the field of autism care and education. Topics included:

  • Understanding ASD: Signs, Symptoms, and Support Strategies

  • Navigating the Education System for Children with ASD

  • Mental Health and Well-being for Caregivers

  • Advocacy and Rights for Individuals with ASD

These sessions provided attendees with practical advice, new insights, and a sense of empowerment to better support their loved ones with ASD.

Family Activities: To create a fun and inclusive atmosphere, we organized various activities for families and children. These included:

  • Arts and crafts stations where children could express themselves creatively

  • Sensory-friendly play areas designed to accommodate the needs of children with ASD

  • Interactive storytelling sessions that captivated the young audience

  • A photo booth with props and costumes, allowing families to capture joyful memories of the day

Distribution of Essential Supplies: Understanding the daily challenges faced by families with children with ASD, we distributed essential supplies such as diapers, pads, and food parcels. This support was warmly received and greatly appreciated by the families.

Community Impact

The event was a resounding success, drawing over 1,000 participants. It was heartening to see the community come together, united in support of individuals with ASD and their families. The positive energy and shared experiences created a strong sense of belonging and solidarity.
